Tips For Improving Garage Door Security

Like your front door, your garage door is an entry point into your home. It’s important to know how to secure your garage door, not just for the purpose of protecting your garage from theft and safeguarding your vehicles, but also to prevent thieves from entering your home through the garage.

Luckily, there are many ways to go about protecting your garage from break-ins. Here are three useful tips for securing your garage door.

1.Block The Release Lever

One way thieves can break into your garage is by pulling the emergency release lever. Although this lever is inside your garage, thieves know where it is located. They straighten a coat hanger with the hook at the far end and snake it through your door where the weather-stripping meets the top of the door. They can then hook either the lever itself or the red string you pull to engage the lever and release the door.

To prevent this, there are shields you can buy to surround the release lever on the inside, blocking thieves from gaining access to it in this fashion. They’re rather easy to install and can offer important protection. You can also make your own garage door shields.

2. Replace Your Garage Door

If you have an older, wooden garage door, a potential thief may be able to simply kick it in or knock a hole in it with a hammer. To avoid this, it may be time to install a tough, steel door that will be much harder to penetrate. An insulated door with multiple layers of steel and insulation is almost impossible to break through.

3. Ensure Garage Door Opener Security

You can do all you want to secure your garage door, but if your garage door opener does not have adequate security, it will all be for nothing. Older garage door openers have static codes, meaning if a potential thief can find the right garage door remote with the right code, they can open your garage door whenever they want. More modern garage door openers have rolling codes that change every time you use it, making them extremely difficult to hack.
